Doctor Who Digital Trading Card Game Is Coming to Ethereum Blockchain | BTCMANAGER

Popular science fiction show Doctor Who is set to mark its entry into the digital trading card game space via Ethereum blockchain.

Doctor Who Arrives on the Ethereum Blockchain

According to an August 13 tweet by Reality Gaming Group – a UK-based mobile game publisher – it has partnered with BBC Studios to develop a digital trading card game on the Ethereum blockchain for the latter’s famous TV series, Doctor Who.

The partnership will see the show’s fans collect and trade digital versions of their favorite Doctor Who characters, and battle friends in the Doctor Who: Worlds Apart game.

Notably, the trading cards will be tokenized into non-fungible tokens (NFTs) or unique tokens that cannot be exchanged for other similar tokens. To learn more about NFTs, check out BTCManager’s guide on the same.

The non-fungibility of the tokens will give each of them unique properties that will enable them to function as a digital collectible to be traded among friends or used in the game. It’s also worthy of note that akin to physical trading cards, these Doctor Who digital collectibles will also feature rare trading cards featuring various doctors, companions, allies, and foes.

In an email sent to Coindesk, Kevin Jorge, senior producer for Games & Interactive at BBC Studios, noted that the Doctor Who being one of the most loved and long-running shows on British television will enable developers to draw from roughly 58 years’ worth of content.

Further, Jorge opined the security of blockchain technology will assure the fans of the legitimacy of the trading cards and safeguard them from piracy and scams.

Digital Trading Cards to Be ERC-721 Tokens

An excerpt from an email by Reality Gaming Group co-founder and tech lead, Morten Rongaard reads:

“The cards will be ERC-721 running on a private fork of ethereum, trading on our own marketplace – but we will eventually be running on interacting with ethereum mainnet so that users can withdraw to 3rd party platforms like OpenSea.”

Limited edition cards, in packs of five, will be available for purchase from October 2020 while the game is slated for launch on PC in 2021 with plans for mobile launch also in the pipeline, the announcement added.

In related news, BTCManager reported in December last year that blockchain startup Stryking had concluded its Christmas auction of Ethereum-based FC Bayern Munich NFTs which brought it over 240 ETH (approx. $101,810) at current market price.
